FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that has a holistic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. As a form of Allied Health, Osteopaths are Registered under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Osteopaths look at the body as a whole and consider all aspects of health to achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients.
What do Osteopaths treat?
Osteopaths treat a wide variety of conditions involving the neuro-musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues). These include, but are not limited to:
- Back or Neck pain
- Hip or Shoulder pain
- Sporting injuries
- Headaches/Migraines
- Tendon injuries & Bursitis
- Jaw pain/dysfunction
- Pain associated with Arthritis
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Joint/ligament sprains
- Pregnancy-related pain
- Other forms of Joint or Muscle pain including postural or work-related
What should I expect from an Osteopathy appointment?
Your Osteopath will take a thorough history about your complaint and will also ask relevant questions about your overall health. From there, an assessment will be done including postural and functional movement screens. Based on this information, your Osteopath will formulate a working diagnosis and explain what they think is causing your pain. We will then formulate a management plan together to suit your needs/goals. Hands on treatment and exercise rehab will follow, provided it is safe to do so. If we determine that Osteopathic treatment is not suitable for your injury then we will refer you to the appropriate practitioner or specialist.
Do I need a referral to see an Osteopath?
No, you do not need a Doctor's referral to see an Osteopath. However, depending on your condition it may be appropriate to work together with your GP or other Allied Health practitioners to achieve the best outcomes.
Is Osteopathy covered by Medicare or Private Health Insurance?
Osteopathy is not covered by Medicare, unless you have been given a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan from your GP. These are available for patients with chronic conditions who meet the criteria, and entitle you to up to 5 Medicare-subsidised Allied Health treatments per calendar year.

Depending on the level of your Private Health Insurance cover, Osteopathy may be covered. We have HICAPS available on-site for instant Private Health rebates.
